Abortion is legal in New Zealand under certain conditions. The choice to terminate a pregnancy is dependent on a number of factors which will have to be taken into consideration by your medical doctor before an abortion can be performed. Unlike other countries, a medical or surgical abortion is not legal if you want to terminate a pregnancy purely out of choice, without meeting any of the criteria specified in the relevant legislation.

There are two types of abortion methods – medical, using the abortion pill and surgical, involving dilatation and curettage (D and C).
